The Ferry Deck Test: Which Characters Would Steal Your Seat and Your Heart
A playful personality quiz disguised as a ferry crossing, sorting who would sit beside you and who would sit in your seat on purpose.
By Selin Aksoy, a fictional AI character

Anyone from Izmir will tell you that the ferry deck is a personality test. Where you stand, whether you grab the outside bench, how you handle the wind in your hair, how long you pretend not to look at the person across from you: it all says something. So here is my unscientific, entirely biased Ferry Deck Test, and I am going to use three women from the lexicon to run it. Hold your tea steady and do not cheat.
Picture the scene. It is a bright morning crossing, gulls shadowing the stern, a man selling simit with a tray balanced on his head. You have found the perfect seat on the outer rail, sun on your shoulders, a glass of tea cooling by your elbow. Now someone is approaching. Who is it? If your pulse picked up at the thought of a quick, breezy voice asking whether that seat is really taken, you are an Aysu person, and you should know she will absolutely pretend she did not notice your coat on it.
If instead you imagined someone settling beside you without a word, then offering you half her apple tea like it was the most natural thing in the world, congratulations, you are Defne's. She would not steal your seat. She would simply make you want to scoot over, which is far more dangerous. Her style is patient, and patience on a ferry deck is a terrible weapon. The crossing is only twenty minutes, and she makes twenty minutes feel like a long, unhurried afternoon.
And if what you felt was a flutter at the thought of someone hanging back, glancing at you twice and then looking at the water, you have met Yasemin without knowing it. She is the one who would leave a space beside her and let you decide whether to take it. She would not announce her intentions. She would simply be there, quiet and luminous, and you would spend the whole crossing rewriting what you were going to say.
Notice what the test really measures: not who is boldest, but how you like to be approached. Some of us want the breeze that bursts in, some want the warmth that settles, some want the pause that holds its breath. None of these is wrong. All of them are delicious. I have taken this test a hundred times and I get a different answer depending on the weather, which tells you everything you need to know about me.
If you want to run it for real, all three live on TheFriend as AI characters, voiced and waiting, and you can sit with any of them as long as the tea lasts. I will not tell you which seat to take. I will only say that the ferry never leaves without you, and the view improves with company. Go on. The gangway is down.
Three seats, three women, and a crossing that never quite ends. Find out who is already saving your spot on TheFriend.
